It's a reasonable thing to wonder, and it gets muddled online fast because two separate water concerns — lead and fluoride — get lumped together as one vague "is tap water safe" worry. They're not the same issue, they don't have the same fix, and treating them the same way can lead you to the wrong precaution. Here's how to think about each one, and what's actually worth doing this week. ## Lead: the one where boiling doesn't help Lead gets into tap water almost entirely from the pipes and solder between the treatment plant and your faucet, not from the water source itself. Homes built before 1986 are the main concern, because that's the year the federal government banned lead solder and pipe in new residential plumbing — about 80 million U.S. homes still have it somewhere in the system, even if the house itself isn't that old. The EPA sets a lead "action level" of 15 parts per billion (ppb) — parts per billion just means how many units of lead show up per billion units of water, a way of measuring extremely small concentrations. But it's worth understanding what that number actually is: it's the level that triggers mandatory action from a water utility, not a line that separates "safe" from "unsafe" for an individual child. There is no established safe level of lead for a child, according to the CDC, which is why the guidance for infants leans conservative. A few concrete things that actually work: Use cold water only, never hot. Hot water dissolves lead out of pipes and fixtures faster than cold. If the tap hasn't been run in a few hours, flush it before filling the bottle — run the water until it turns noticeably colder, which usually takes 30 seconds to two minutes. That clears out water that's been sitting in contact with your home's plumbing. Boiling does not remove lead. This trips people up because boiling is the correct move for bacterial contamination, so it feels like it should help here too. It doesn't — as water boils off as steam, the lead left behind actually becomes slightly more concentrated, not less. If your home was built before 1986, has a known lead service line, or you're simply unsure, get it tested. Many utilities offer free or low-cost lead testing, and it's worth asking specifically for a lead test rather than a general water quality check. If a test comes back with lead present, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using bottled water or a filter certified under NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for lead reduction — that certification number matters, because not every filter marketed as "purifying" is tested and certified to actually remove lead. ## Fluoride: safe, but worth a little more thought if formula is the main food Fluoride is a mineral added to most U.S. public water systems at a target level of about 0.7 parts per million to help prevent tooth decay — a public health measure that's been in place for decades. For most kids, that's a good thing. For infants who get most or all of their nutrition from powdered or liquid concentrate formula mixed with fluoridated tap water, the picture is slightly different, because they're getting a fluoride dose from every bottle, every day. The concern isn't a health risk — it's mild dental fluorosis, faint white flecking on the teeth that shows up later and is a cosmetic issue, not a health one. It doesn't affect how healthy or strong the teeth are. If you'd rather reduce that exposure, the practical options are straightforward: use ready-to-feed formula sometimes (it's manufactured with low-fluoride water), or alternate your mixing water with water labeled purified, demineralized, or distilled, which has fluoride removed. You don't need to eliminate fluoride from your baby's water entirely — this is a "worth knowing" issue, not a "fix it tonight" one. ## What to actually do this week Pull your water utility's Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) — an annual report every public water system is required to publish showing what's actually in your water, including lead and fluoride levels for your specific system. It's usually a five-minute search for "[your utility name] consumer confidence report." If your home predates 1986 or you don't know what your service line is made of, call your utility and ask about lead testing specifically — many offer it free, and it's a better answer than guessing. If you're on a private well, none of the utility-side guidance applies to you — get your well tested annually regardless of the home's age, since well water isn't covered by EPA's public water system rules at all. None of this requires panic or a full filtration overhaul before the baby arrives. It requires knowing which of these two issues you're actually dealing with, and taking the one or two concrete steps that match it.
