Whole-House or Under the Sink? A No-Nonsense Way to Pick a Water Filter

If you've started shopping for a water filter, you've probably run into two very different-looking products: a big tank system that gets plumbed into your main water line, and a smaller cartridge unit that lives under your kitchen sink. They get compared constantly, but they're not really competing for the same job, and picking based on price or tank size alone is how people end up with expensive equipment that doesn't actually fix what was bothering them. The technical names for these are point-of-entry (POE) and point-of-use (POU) systems. A POE system, which is what most people mean by "whole-house filter," installs where the main line enters your home and treats every fixture downstream: showers, washing machine, outdoor spigots, all of it. A POU system treats water at one specific tap, usually the kitchen sink, and leaves the rest of the house alone. Neither one is the "upgraded" version of the other. They solve different problems. Here's where the shopping gets confusing: nearly everything on the market says "NSF certified," and that phrase alone tells you almost nothing. NSF International is the standards body that tests water treatment equipment, but there are several different standards, and they cover very different things. NSF/ANSI Standard 42 covers aesthetic issues — chlorine taste and odor, mostly. NSF/ANSI Standard 53 covers contaminants with an actual health effect, the kind the EPA regulates, things like lead or certain byproducts. NSF/ANSI 58 is specifically for reverse osmosis systems, and NSF/ANSI 401 covers a newer category of "emerging contaminants," which is where PFAS reduction claims show up. A filter certified only to 42 will make your water taste better and won't touch lead. Read the specific standard number on the box, not just the word "certified." Before you buy either type, do two things most people skip. First, find out what's actually in your water. If you're on a municipal supply, your utility's Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is the annual water quality report they're required to mail or publish will list what was detected and at what level. If you're on a well, there's no CCR, so get it lab tested; a home test strip can flag pH and hardness but won't reliably catch lead or PFAS at the levels that matter. Second, if you're considering a whole-house system, find your flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM), since an undersized POE unit will tank your water pressure the moment two fixtures run at once. Once you know what you're dealing with, the choice usually sorts itself out. If the complaint is chlorine taste, mild odor, or scale buildup across every faucet and appliance in the house, a POE carbon filtration system built to NSF/ANSI 42 (and 53 if you also want chlorine byproduct reduction) treats the whole problem at the source. If the concern is something more specific — lead from old plumbing, PFAS, nitrates, arsenic — and you mainly care about what you're drinking and cooking with, an under-sink reverse osmosis system certified to NSF/ANSI 58 and 401 is usually the more effective and more affordable route, because it's concentrating the treatment on one tap instead of trying to scrub every gallon that touches your toilet and hose bib. None of this requires guessing. Pull your CCR, match the contaminant to the right standard number, and size the system to the problem you actually have — not the biggest tank at the hardware store.
